The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits near Akure Airport in Ondo State, following a swift joint security operation on March 15, 2026.
The suspects were apprehended in the vicinity of the airport’s perimeter after a distress alert from the Eleyewo community prompted immediate action by aviation and local security agencies.
In a press release issued on March 15 and signed by Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Henry Agbebire, FAAN detailed that the arrests stemmed from reports of suspicious individuals sighted behind the airport fence towards the Eleyewo axis. Security personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and other local outfits mobilised rapidly for a coordinated search. During the operation, some suspects attempted to flee but were surrounded and detained by the team.

Handover and Inter-Agency Commendation

The four individuals have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation and investigation. FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security, military, police, Amotekun, and community vigilantes, whose joint efforts led to the successful outcome. The authority stressed that the incident reinforces the urgent need to bolster airport perimeter protection.
FAAN further noted that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development with presidential support, has accelerated the provision of modern perimeter fencing and enhanced security infrastructure at airports nationwide. Work on these upgrades is already progressing in phases to prevent unauthorised access, unlawful intrusions, and other threats, ensuring safer environments for travellers and airport host communities.

Commitment to Aviation Safety

The statement reassured the public of FAAN’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety and security of all airport facilities. Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku highlighted the multi-agency involvement and reiterated calls for strengthened measures like improved fencing and surveillance to safeguard critical aviation assets.
This development aligns with earlier reports describing farmers raising alarms after spotting armed men on motorcycles near the fence, leading to panic and the subsequent ambush. The arrests come amid persistent banditry and kidnapping threats in Akure North Local Government Area, including recent abductions in nearby communities like Eleyewo, Ilu-Abo, and Ayede.

Vulnerability of Perimeter Zones

The proximity of these threats to the airport underscores vulnerabilities in perimeter security, where rural farmlands border operational zones. FAAN’s proactive stance on infrastructure enhancements reflects broader federal priorities to fortify aviation facilities against evolving risks, including potential reconnaissance or disruptions by criminal elements.
No injuries were reported during the operation, and airport activities continued without major interruptions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the suspects’ intentions, possible links to regional syndicates, and weapons or items recovered. Police sources have indicated useful statements from those in custody.
