Nigeria’s Super Eagles were seconds away from victory but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Poland after a dramatic late equaliser in an international friendly on Wednesday night at the PGE Narodowy Stadium.
Eric Chelle’s side took the lead in the 23rd minute through Terem Moffi, who finished clinically following a well-worked move. Poland levelled just before half-time through Kacper Potulski, ensuring the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.Nigeria regained the advantage in the second half when Paul Onuachu converted a penalty to make it 2-1. The Super Eagles looked set to hold on for a hard-fought win until Przemysław Wiśniewski struck in the fifth minute of added time to snatch a share of the spoils for the hosts.
The result leaves Nigeria with mixed feelings after a competitive outing that featured several second-half substitutions, including Philip Otele, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi, Calvin Bassey and Onuachu himself. Chelle used the match to test squad depth and tactical adjustments as the team prepares for upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This was the second meeting between the sides in recent years. Nigeria had defeated Poland 1-0 in a 2018 pre-World Cup friendly, with Victor Moses scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.
Although Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Chelle era continues to focus on building momentum and cohesion through high-level friendlies. The Super Eagles will face another tough test when they take on World Cup-bound Portugal on June 10.
The draw in Warsaw provides valuable experience against a European side, highlighting both promising attacking moments and areas needing improvement in defensive concentration during the closing stages of matches.
