China has warned it will retaliate if the United States launches military strikes against Iran, as Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning addressed escalating protests and U.S. threats during a press conference on January 13, 2026.

On U.S. threats and potential strikes, Mao said: “China hopes Iran will maintain stability… We always oppose interference in other countries’ internal affairs and oppose the use or threat of force in international relations.”

Responding to recent U.S. warnings for citizens to leave Iran and talk of military options, she added: “We hope all parties will act in ways conducive to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

“We are closely following the developments… We will take all measures necessary to protect the safety of Chinese nationals.” – Mao.

Her remarks come as activists and BBC sources report hundreds of protesters killed in a brutal crackdown, with hospitals overwhelmed and an internet blackout in place. Iran’s parliament speaker has warned that U.S. and Israeli targets would be considered “legitimate” if attacked.

The protests, initially sparked by inflation, have grown into demands for an end to clerical rule under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities have labeled demonstrators “enemies of God,” a charge that carries the death penalty. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened intervention, saying Iranian leaders “want to negotiate” but warning that action may precede talks.
