Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to mediate the long-running dispute over Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Egypt views as a critical threat to its Nile River water supplies.

In a post on X, Sisi confirmed he had responded to Trump’s letter, reiterating Egypt’s longstanding concerns about water security. “Egypt values the U.S. offer and remains committed to protecting its vital interests,” he wrote, stressing the need for a fair, binding agreement that safeguards downstream countries.

Trump announced on January 16 that he was prepared to restart U.S. mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia, reviving efforts that stalled in 2019–2020 when Ethiopia withdrew from negotiations. The offer comes amid renewed tensions following Ethiopia’s continued filling and operation of the $5 billion dam on the Blue Nile, a tributary that provides most of Egypt’s freshwater.

Sudan’s army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan also welcomed the mediation proposal, citing concerns over water regulation, dam safety, and flood risks. Both Egypt and Sudan argue the project could reduce downstream flows and endanger millions reliant on the Nile, while Ethiopia insists on its sovereign right to develop the resource for electricity generation and economic growth.

Despite years of trilateral talks led by the African Union, no comprehensive deal has been reached. The renewed U.S. involvement signals Washington’s broader interest in African infrastructure and water security, though no details on mediation format or timeline have yet been provided.
