Senegal lifted their second Africa Cup of Nations trophy after a gripping 1-0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco in one of the most dramatic finals in tournament history.

Pape Gueye’s thunderous strike in the 94th minute of extra time proved decisive at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, capping a night of high tension, disputed decisions, and remarkable resilience from the Lions of Teranga.

The contest remained goalless through 90 minutes and descended into chaos late in regulation. Senegal thought they had taken the lead when Ismaila Sarr scored, but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Achraf Hakimi. Moments later, VAR awarded Morocco a penalty after Brahim Díaz was adjudged fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf. Outraged, Senegal’s players walked off the pitch in protest, delaying play for nearly 15 minutes.

Captain Sadio Mané stayed on the field and persuaded his teammates to return, urging calm. When play resumed, Díaz’s attempted Panenka was easily saved by Édouard Mendy, sending the final into extra time.

Senegal struck quickly. Gueye surged forward and unleashed a powerful left-footed drive from the edge of the box into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Yassine Bounou helpless. Morocco pressed hard, hitting the bar through Nayef Aguerd, but Mendy and the Senegalese defense held firm on a rain-slicked surface.

The triumph gives Senegal their second continental crown in five years, following their 2021 success, and solidifies their place among Africa’s elite under coach Pape Thiaw. Mané, who hinted this might be his final AFCON, delivered leadership both on and off the ball in a performance widely praised.

For Morocco, the defeat ends a strong home campaign—unbeaten until the final—and prolongs their wait for a second title since 1976.

Beyond the scoreline, the match will be remembered for its raw drama: refereeing controversies, an unprecedented player protest, a pivotal penalty miss, and individual heroics. Fireworks lit up Rabat as Senegal celebrated, while Morocco’s players and fans were left to reflect on what might have been.
