The Federal Government has officially opened applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering fully funded postgraduate opportunities for Nigerian students to pursue MSc and PhD studies in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
The announcement, shared via the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, invites eligible candidates to apply through the PTDF portal at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng. The scheme targets disciplines critical to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and energy transition, including petroleum engineering, geosciences, chemical engineering, environmental management, renewable energy, and related fields.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants will receive comprehensive coverage:
- 🎓 Full tuition fees
- ✈️ Return economy air tickets
- 🏠 Accommodation allowance
- 💵 Living stipend
- 🏥 Health insurance
- 🔬 Bench fees (for research-intensive programmes)
PTDF emphasized: “The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise, while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.”
Eligibility Requirements
- MSc applicants: Minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) degree in a relevant field, NYSC completion, computer literacy certification, and at least five O’Level credits (including English and Mathematics).
- PhD applicants: Must submit a research proposal (≤5 pages) outlining objectives, methodology, and data collection strategy.
PhD scholars in the UK will follow a split-site model, conducting research partly at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK) and partly at partner universities such as Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Portsmouth.
Selection Criteria
The scholarship is merit-based and highly competitive. Selection will consider:
- Academic performance
- Quality and relevance of research proposals (for PhD)
- Professional memberships
- Alignment with oil and gas priorities
Applicants must verify their National Identity Number (NIN) before submission. Multiple applications or falsified documents will lead to disqualification.
Strategic Context
Established in 1973 under Decree 25, PTDF’s mandate is to build Nigerian expertise in petroleum through training, research, and technology transfer. Over the decades, thousands of Nigerians have benefited from overseas postgraduate sponsorship, strengthening manpower in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.
Recent editions have increasingly incorporated energy transition themes—renewables, carbon management, hydrogen—to align with global decarbonisation trends and Nigeria’s net-zero ambitions.
Applications will close on February 27, 2026. Candidates are advised to apply online via the PTDF portal for approved programmes at partner institutions. PTDF urged applicants to consult official channels only and avoid fraudulent agents.
