The Abia State Government has launched two major digital initiatives in the education sector: the Education Management and Information System (EMIS) and the Abia State Learning Identity Number (ABSLIN).

Following a briefing on Monday, February 16, these programs are now officially active across public and private schools to improve data management and monitor student performance.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Goodluck Ubochi detailed the rollout, explaining that ABSLIN assigns a unique identification number to every pupil in the state. This allows authorities to follow each student’s academic journey from initial enrollment through the completion of basic education.

Centralized Data and School Access

Information Commissioner Okey Kanu confirmed that every school has received secure login credentials to access EMIS. The system creates a unified database that supports:

  • Real-time Attendance: Monitoring daily presence to reduce dropout rates.

  • Teacher Deployment: Ensuring staffing needs are met in all 17 LGAs.

  • Academic Integrity: Detecting “ghost pupils” and ensuring performance records are centralized.

Teacher Recruitment and Literacy

The government also provided updates on its human capital development:

  • Teacher Recruitment: A total of 36,415 applications were received for the current round, with 24,023 candidates shortlisted for a computer-based test (CBT).

  • Mass Literacy: The Adult and Non-Formal Education Programme has officially resumed for the 2025–2026 session, targeting out-of-school adults and artisans.

Abia State recently emerged as the overall best at the National Basic Education School Sports Games (winning eight gold medals) and has maintained the top spot in NECO results for three consecutive years. Governor Alex Otti has prioritized these reforms, allocating significant budgetary resources to ensure the sustainability of these digital tools.
