The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has significantly increased prize money for the winners of its two flagship club competitions — the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup — as announced by CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Under the new structure for the 2025–2026 season:
-
The Champions League winner will receive USD 6 million, a 50% increase from the previous amount.
-
The Confederation Cup champion will be awarded USD 4 million, doubling the prior prize and representing a 100% rise.
Since Motsepe took office, the Champions League winner’s prize has risen steadily from USD 2.5 million (2020 – 2024 cycle) to USD 4 million (2024 – 2025) and now to USD 6 million – a cumulative increase of 140% over five years. The Confederation Cup prize has followed a similar trajectory, moving from USD 1.25 million (2020 – 2024) to USD 2 million (2024 – 2025) and now to USD 4 million.
The increases are part of CAF’s broader strategy to enhance the financial appeal and competitiveness of African club football, attract greater investment, and reward clubs for success on the continental stage. Motsepe has repeatedly emphasised that stronger prize money supports club sustainability, player development, and infrastructure improvement across the continent.
The updated figures apply to the upcoming 2025 – 2026 editions of both tournaments. CAF has not disclosed changes to prize money for runners-up, semi-finalists, or earlier stages, though such adjustments are typically scaled proportionally in previous cycles. The announcement comes at a time when African club competitions are gaining increased global visibility, with the Champions League in particular benefiting from improved broadcasting deals and participation from high-profile clubs.
