Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced that it had launched missile and drone attacks on a U.S. base in Jordan and 21 other targets across the Gulf in retaliation for American strikes yesterday near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media released footage of launches from Tehran and reported strikes on facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait and other locations hosting U.S. forces.

Bahrain’s Defense Force said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed several incoming threats aimed at civilian areas. Jordan and Kuwait also reported successful interceptions of Iranian missiles. U.S. officials described many of the Iranian claims as exaggerated or inaccurate, stating there were no significant casualties or major damage at American facilities.

The Iranian retaliation followed U.S. Central Command strikes on June 9, ordered by President Donald Trump, which targeted Iranian air defense systems, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. Those U.S. strikes were a direct response to the downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter on June 8 off the coast of Oman. Both crew members were rescued safely and reported uninjured.

CENTCOM described the American operation (which lasted several hours and struck nearly 20 Iranian targets) as a “proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression” and part of efforts to protect U.S. forces and commercial shipping in the region. Iranian media reported explosions near Qeshm Island, Sirik and other southern locations following the U.S. action.

The rapid cycle of strikes marks one of the most serious direct U.S. – Iran confrontations since the two sides agreed to a ceasefire in April.

Oil prices have risen in early Asian trading today as fears of disruption to the Strait of Hormuz escalate with further potential disruptions to the route through which roughly one-fifth of global oil passes. A separate maritime security incident has also been reported, with a cargo vessel 88 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s Balhaf coming under approach by armed individuals; its security team exchanged fire and repelled the craft.

President Trump had described the U.S. response to the Apache incident as “very strong” and “very powerful.” Meanwhile, Iran has warned of further retaliation, while the U.S. military says its forces remain fully postured and vigilant.
