U.S. Embassy in Nigeria Warns Americans Abroad: Online Passport Renewal Invalidates Current Document

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has warned American citizens that attempting to renew their passport online while physically located outside the United States will result in the immediate cancellation of their existing valid passport.

In a public advisory issued today, the embassy clarifies that the online renewal system is strictly available only to applicants who are physically present in a U.S. state or territory at the time of submission. A U.S. mailing address alone is not sufficient.

Once an online renewal application is submitted and processed, the Department of State automatically invalidates the current passport in its system. This means the physical passport can no longer be used for travel, even if it still has months or years of validity left. Applicants are explicitly told not to use the old passport after submitting the online application.

The service is limited to eligible U.S. citizens who meet all the following conditions:

  • Age 25 or older
  • Most recent passport was valid for 10 years and is expiring within one year or expired within the last five years
  • No changes to personal details (name, date of birth, sex, etc.)
  • No international travel planned within the next six weeks
  • Undamaged passport that has not been reported lost or stolen

The online option is not available for first-time passports, minors, name changes, damaged or lost passports, or special-issuance documents.

U.S. citizens in Nigeria cannot use the online system. They must renew through the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate in Lagos, either by appointment or through the embassy’s mail-in pilot program for eligible routine renewals.

The embassy strongly recommends checking passport validity early and planning renewals well in advance, especially before travel. Many countries, including those in West Africa, require at least six months of passport validity for entry.
