Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a strong directive prohibiting all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force from engaging in unauthorised social media activities that could undermine the force’s integrity and public image.
In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the IGP warned that police personnel must desist from creating or publishing videos, conducting live sessions, or posting content while in uniform or clearly identifying themselves as members of the force without official approval.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of officers using social media platforms for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes. The IGP stressed that while social media is a valuable tool for public communication, its use by serving officers must strictly comply with the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy and relevant regulations.
Officers are specifically barred from commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their official status for personal gain. The IGP emphasised that any violation of this order will attract disciplinary action, with supervisory officers including Commissioners of Police and Heads of Departments, held accountable for failures to enforce compliance within their commands.
To ensure adherence, the Force Intelligence Department and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) have been directed to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify erring personnel.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism, and responsible public engagement, assuring citizens of its dedication to upholding public trust.
