Villa Complete £30m Suzuki Signing
Aston Villa have completed the signing of Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Serie A side Parma in a deal worth approximately £30 million including bonuses, the club announced on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract running until 2031. The transfer was finalised after a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed, allowing Villa to move quickly for their preferred long-term target. Suzuki becomes the first Japanese goalkeeper set to appear in the Premier League.
Born on 21 August 2002 in Newark, New Jersey, to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, Suzuki was named after the biblical Mount Zion. He moved to Japan at a young age and progressed through the ranks at Urawa Red Diamonds, making his senior debut as a teenager. A spell at Belgian club Sint-Truiden provided European experience before Parma signed him in 2024 for a reported £8 million. He made between 57 and 59 appearances over two Serie A seasons, establishing himself as a consistent performer for a mid-table side.
Internationally, Suzuki has become Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper, earning more than 20 senior caps and starting all four of the national team’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Japan were eliminated in the round of 16 by Brazil. Those performances drew interest from several major European clubs.
The arrival comes with Emiliano Martínez still at Villa Park after a proposed transfer to Juventus fell through. The 33-year-old Argentine World Cup winner remains the current first-choice, though his long-term future is uncertain. Club hierarchy regard the 6ft 3in Suzuki as a potential long-term successor capable of anchoring the position for years. Suzuki is understood to have preferred the move to Villa for the opportunity of regular football under Unai Emery and the prospect of Champions League competition.
The signing forms part of a busy transfer window for the Midlands club, who also confirmed the arrival of Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atlético Madrid on the same day. Suzuki is expected to compete for the starting place as Villa prepare for the new Premier League season, beginning with an away fixture at Brighton.
