Gunfire Hits Niamey Airport and Palace Axis
Sustained gunfire and explosions erupted in Niger’s capital before dawn on Saturday, concentrating on Diori Hamani International Airport, Air Base 101 and the approaches to the presidential palace.
Two Reuters witnesses described heavy exchanges that continued around the palace and later resumed near the airport after 02:13 GMT. The military government of General Abdourahamane Tiani had issued no official communiqué in the early hours.
A Nigerien security source told Reuters that attackers had targeted the airport and attempted to breach the security perimeter around the presidency. A second source said forces had opened search operations, that some attackers had been “neutralized” and that others had fled. Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a member of Niger’s Consultative Council, wrote that Base 101 had come under attack but that the situation was under control. Reuters said it could not immediately verify those accounts.
Local monitors reported loud gunfire toward the air base shortly after 00:30 GMT. Claims that residents were hit by stray rounds and unverified suggestions of responsibility by Islamic State Sahel Province had not been confirmed by official sources or recognized jihadist media as wire services filed.
Diori Hamani lies about 10 kilometres from the presidential compound. The complex houses Nigerien air force and drone facilities, Russian Africa Corps elements, Italy’s MISIN training mission and headquarters of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) unified force formed by the juntas of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
The same area has been attacked twice already in 2026. In late January, officials said 20 attackers were killed and 11 captured, with four soldiers wounded. In June, the defence ministry said 11 soldiers, two civilians and 22 attackers were killed. After both incidents the government accused foreign sponsors; those governments rejected the charges, while militant groups claimed the operations.
Casualties, the status of commercial flights and whether the presidency itself was in immediate danger had not been officially established as reporting continued. What was established by witnesses is that Niamey again woke to gunfire around its principal airfield and military hub.
