Carrick to Bring in Holland as Manchester United Assistant

Manchester United have appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim head coach following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. Carrick, 44, agreed terms on Monday night and will be in the dugout for Saturday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s coaching team will include former England assistant Steve Holland as his number two, alongside Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion. Holland brings vast experience from his time with Chelsea and England, where he worked under Gareth Southgate during the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2021 and 2024.

United officials were reportedly impressed by Carrick’s vision for the team, with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox backing his appointment. Carrick is expected to implement a 4‑2‑3‑1 formation, moving away from Amorim’s three‑at‑the‑back system, in line with United’s traditions.

Carrick previously had a brief three‑game stint as caretaker boss in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal. Solskjaer was also considered for the role this time, but United opted for Carrick’s more hands‑on coaching style.

The club believes the blend of Carrick’s tactical approach, Holland’s international pedigree, and the familiarity of Evans, Woodgate, and Binnion with United’s players and academy will provide stability through the remainder of the season.
