Chelsea claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cypriot debutants Pafos FC at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League – league phase.

Moisés Caicedo’s decisive 78th-minute header lifted the Blues into eighth place, keeping automatic qualification for the round of 16 firmly within reach ahead of their final clash with Napoli.

The match marked new head coach Liam Rosenior’s first taste of Champions League success since his appointment on 6 January 2026, following Enzo Maresca’s departure. Rosenior, who previously guided RC Strasbourg to European qualification, deployed a possession-driven approach but faced a disciplined Pafos side making their historic debut after a remarkable qualifying run.

Chelsea controlled proceedings with 68% possession and created numerous chances but struggled to break down Pafos’s compact low block. Filip Jørgensen started in goal behind a back four of Jorrel Hato, Benoît Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Malo Gusto. Caicedo anchored midfield alongside Reece James and Enzo Fernández, while Garnacho, Pedro Neto, and Liam Delap led the attack.

Rosenior introduced Estêvão at half-time for added creativity, followed by a triple substitution—Cucurella, Gittens, and João Pedro—around the 69th minute to inject urgency.

The breakthrough arrived in the 78th minute. Pedro Neto’s corner was flicked on by Badiashile, and Caicedo reacted quickest to power a close-range header past the Pafos goalkeeper. The Ecuadorian midfielder’s growing influence—combining defensive solidity with attacking contributions—earned widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.

Despite defeat, Pafos impressed with their organisation and resilience under Albert Celades, who recently replaced Juan Carlos Carcedo. Their goalkeeper produced several key saves, notably denying Caicedo twice before the decisive goal.

The win extends Chelsea’s strong home record in Europe and delivers back-to-back clean sheets. Rosenior’s side now sit eighth in the expanded 36-team league phase, with automatic last-16 qualification within reach. Pafos remain on six points from seven matches, still in contention for a playoff spot.

Chelsea supporters celebrated the result on social media, hailing Caicedo as “world-class”, while others voiced frustration at missed chances and the struggle against deep-defending sides. Media outlets described the contest as “nervy” and “scrappy”, with Chelsea’s dominance finally rewarded late on.

The Blues now turn their attention to a decisive trip to Napoli, where a top-eight finish—and direct progression—hangs in the balance.
