Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed legislation that will rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald J. Trump, marking another high-profile tribute to the president in his longtime home state.

The bill, which passed the Florida House and Senate in February, renames the airport the “President Donald J. Trump International Airport.” The change is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2026, pending approval of necessary administrative updates by the Federal Aviation Administration and any existing rights agreements.

Palm Beach International Airport serves as the primary gateway for President Trump when he travels to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. The facility has long been associated with the president, who frequently uses it for arrivals and departures.

In a statement from DeSantis’ office, the governor’s action fulfills a legislative provision included in a broader bill addressing commercial service airports. The renaming does not require direct FAA approval for the name itself, though the agency must update navigational charts and databases to reflect the change.

Eric Trump, the president’s son, welcomed the news on X, writing that he was “proud to have played a small role in making this happen.” He thanked DeSantis, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, and others involved in the effort. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller reposted the message in support.

The renaming adds to a series of recent efforts to attach President Trump’s name to prominent public landmarks. These include the recent redesignation of the Kennedy Center as the Trump-Kennedy Center and the United States Institute of Peace as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. Trump has also reportedly discussed renaming New York’s Penn Station and Washington’s Dulles Airport after himself, according to multiple reports.

Supporters view the airport renaming as recognition of Trump’s deep ties to Florida and his influence on the state’s political landscape. Critics, however, see it as part of an unusual push to personalize public infrastructure with a sitting or former president’s name.

Palm Beach International Airport is a busy commercial hub serving South Florida, handling millions of passengers annually. The name change is expected to require updates to signage, airline systems, and official documentation once it takes effect.

The FAA clarified in a statement that changing an airport’s name is considered a local matter and does not require formal agency approval. However, the FAA will handle the technical tasks of updating charts and databases.

The legislation reflects strong Republican support in the Florida Legislature, where the bill passed earlier this year with little opposition. DeSantis, who has had a complex political relationship with Trump in the past, signed the measure without public fanfare.

As the July 1 effective date approaches, airport officials will begin preparations for the transition, including coordination with airlines and transportation authorities to minimize disruption for travelers. The development is the latest example of Trump’s enduring popularity in Florida, a state he has carried decisively in recent elections and where he maintains a significant personal and political presence through Mar-a-Lago.
