The long-awaited process to find the next actor to play James Bond has officially commenced, with auditions already taking place and Amazon MGM Studios confirming that the search for Daniel Craig’s successor is underway.
The studio made the announcement as speculation about the future of the iconic spy franchise reached new heights, five years after Craig’s final outing in No Time To Die and 15 months after Amazon took creative control of the 007 brand.
In a carefully worded statement, Amazon MGM Studios said “the search for the next James Bond is under way,” while declining to comment on specific details during the casting phase. The move signals the beginning of a new chapter for one of cinema’s most enduring franchises, which has entertained audiences for more than six decades.
Industry publication Variety reported that auditions have been held in recent weeks under the guidance of leading casting director Nina Gold, known for her work on major franchises including Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Mamma Mia!. The next James Bond film will be the 26th official entry in the series and will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, whose recent credits include the Dune saga.
Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been hired to write the screenplay, while producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman – recognised for their work on the Spider-Man and Harry Potter films – will help steer the project. This high-calibre creative team has raised expectations that the new Bond adventure will blend fresh storytelling with respect for the franchise’s legacy.
Daniel Craig’s 15-year tenure as 007, spanning five films, redefined the character for a new generation. His portrayal brought emotional depth, physical intensity and a more grounded sensibility to the role, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Since his departure after No Time To Die in 2021, fans and industry insiders have debated who could step into the tuxedo next.
The search has been closely watched, with bookmakers and media outlets regularly updating odds on potential candidates. Among the current frontrunners is British actor Callum Turner, 36, who has featured in the Fantastic Beasts series and received a Bafta nomination for the television drama The Capture.
He also starred in the Apple TV+ war series Masters of the Air. Australian actor Jacob Elordi, 28, widely praised for his roles in Euphoria and Saltburn, and recently Oscar-nominated for Frankenstein, has also emerged as a strong contender. Other names frequently mentioned include Harris Dickinson, Henry Cavill, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James.
The producers face the challenge of selecting an actor who can carry the franchise for potentially a decade or more while appealing to both longtime fans and younger audiences. The successful candidate will become only the seventh official actor to play Bond on screen, following in the footsteps of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.
Speaking at CinemaCon last month, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of film Courtenay Valenti emphasised the studio’s careful approach. “We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,” she said. “It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.” Valenti added that pairing the beloved franchise with a world-class filmmaking team would set the stage for something worthy of Bond’s legacy.
The announcement comes at a time when Hollywood is navigating challenges including rising production costs, shifting audience habits and increased competition from streaming platforms. Successfully relaunching James Bond could serve as a major vote of confidence in the future of big-screen event cinema.
The casting process is expected to remain shrouded in secrecy for some time, with Amazon MGM Studios likely to reveal the new star only when preparations are further advanced. The new Bond actor will inherit a character who has become a cultural icon, representing sophistication, resilience and British ingenuity on the world stage.
Whoever is chosen will face intense scrutiny and enormous pressure to deliver both commercially and artistically. Yet the role also offers the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on one of cinema’s most celebrated series.
