Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of French centre-back Ibrahima Konaté from Liverpool on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old has signed a four-year contract running until June 2030.

Confirmed by the club today, the signing forms part of President Florentino Pérez’s aggressive squad rebuilding following a trophyless 2025-26 season. The player becomes an additional reinforcement under the returning José Mourinho, who was appointed head coach on a three-year deal.

Konaté joins the Spanish giants after five seasons at Liverpool, where he made 183 appearances across all competitions. During his time at Anfield, he won the 2021 – 22 FA Cup and League Cup, and the 2024 – 25 Premier League title. Known for his aerial dominance, composure on the ball, and recovery pace, the 1.94m defender is expected to strengthen a Real Madrid backline that struggled with injuries and inconsistency last season.

The signing reunites Konaté with several French compatriots at the Santiago Bernabéu, including Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Ferland Mendy. His experience in high-pressure matches, including a Champions League final appearance against Real Madrid in 2022, is expected to add leadership and tactical versatility to Mourinho’s squad.

The deal was reportedly pre-agreed pending Pérez’s re-election and represents a cost-effective acquisition of a high-quality centre-back. Konaté reportedly turned down interest from Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and clubs in Saudi Arabia. His wages are understood to be in the region of €12-15 million net per season, plus a substantial signing bonus.

Real Madrid endured an unusually difficult 2025 – 26 campaign, finishing as La Liga runners-up behind Barcelona and exiting the Champions League in the quarter-finals. The defensive frailties exposed during that season, particularly with long-term injuries to Éder Militão and Antonio Rüdiger, prompted the club to prioritise reinforcements in central defence.

Mourinho’s return 13 years after his first spell at the club signals a clear shift toward greater defensive organisation and tactical discipline. Konaté’s profile fits the Portuguese coach’s preference for physically strong, reliable centre-backs capable of playing in both back-four and back-three systems.

The signing is expected to be the first of several incoming transfers as Real Madrid refreshes its squad ahead of pre-season, which begins on July 13. Links with other targets, including right-back Denzel Dumfries, suggest a busy summer window.
