Three Students Slain in Philippine High School Shooting Incident
Three students were killed and five others wounded when two armed teenagers opened fire inside San Jose National High School on Monday morning, turning a regular school day into a scene of horror.
The attack happened shortly after 9 a.m. while classes were underway. Police say both suspects (one of them a student at the school) were carrying pistols and began shooting in the school compound. Within hours, both minors were in custody, but the swift arrests did little to ease the grief now gripping the Eastern Visayas region.
All victims were students. The five wounded were rushed for emergency treatment, though their conditions have not yet been made public. Authorities are withholding the victims’ names until families have been formally notified.
Tacloban City Police and Regional Police Office 8 moved quickly, sealing off the school and surrounding streets. Additional officers were deployed to reassure students, teachers, and panicked parents. Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic moments after the shooting, including one suspect being restrained by police and residents near a nearby house where he had tried to hide.
Vice Mayor Raymund Romualdez confirmed both attackers are minors, meaning they will be handled under the Philippines’ Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act, which prioritizes rehabilitation. Presidential Palace Press Officer Claire Castro praised the Philippine National Police for their rapid response, saying the suspects were “nabbed swiftly.”
Investigators are now focused on piecing together what led to the violence. Key questions remain: how the two teenagers obtained the firearms, whether the attack was planned, and what (if any) personal conflict triggered it. No motive has been officially released.
While gun crime occurs in the Philippines, shootings inside schools are rare. This incident has nevertheless amplified long-standing worries about youth access to weapons, online influences on young people, and the overall safety of educational institutions. It also highlights the challenges of dealing with juvenile offenders under current laws.
Community leaders and the Department of Education are expected to review security protocols at schools across the region, with many expected to call for stronger campus measures, better counseling support, and tighter controls on illegal firearms.
