Mbappé Brace Gives Madrid Clásico Win

Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including a clinical 87th-minute winner, as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday night. The result ended Barcelona’s nine-game league winning streak, inflicted their first domestic defeat of the season, and reduced the gap between the sides from six points to three.

Raphinha had equalised for the hosts in the 61st minute, but Madrid’s resilience on the counter proved decisive in front of 62,055 spectators. Mbappé’s second goal of the night was also his 100th in a Real Madrid shirt. José Mourinho marked the moment with a knee-slide on the touchline.

The first half was open and tense. Arda Güler tested Joan García early, while Barcelona created chances through Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Madrid took the lead four minutes before the interval when a move down the left ended with Yan Diomande’s low cross; Gerard Martín’s clearance ricocheted off Mbappé and into the net. Barcelona nearly levelled before half-time when Fermín López released Yamal, only for the teenager to shoot wide.

After the restart Hansi Flick’s side improved. Pedri produced a reverse pass that allowed Raphinha to shoot low past Andriy Lunin, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out. The Brazilian, La Liga’s leading scorer with 13 goals, celebrated in front of the home crowd. Madrid, with Lunin standing in for the flu-stricken Thibaut Courtois and Vinícius Júnior suspended, defended stoutly. Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jude Bellingham made important interventions, and Lunin produced a fine one-handed save from Martín’s header.

With three minutes remaining, substitute Eduardo Camavinga – introduced around the 80th minute – combined with Bellingham. Camavinga surged into the area, slipped past Pau Cubarsí and cut the ball back for Mbappé to finish into an empty net as García was drawn out. The Frenchman wheeled away; Mourinho slid on his knees; and Madrid’s bench emptied onto the pitch.

Barcelona entered the match on 27 points from nine wins. The defeat leaves them on 27 points from 10 games (nine wins, one loss). Atlético Madrid sit second on 25 points, while Real Madrid rise to 24 (eight wins, two losses) and sit three points behind the leaders. What had appeared a commanding start for Flick’s side is now a closer contest. Barcelona had lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek Champions League action. Madrid, under Mourinho in his second spell, had trailed by six points and faced the prospect of a nine-point deficit; instead they left Camp Nou with their first league win in Barcelona in three years.

Mbappé’s brace, his 10th league goal of the season, proved decisive. His first was fortuitous; the second came from precise transition play involving Bellingham and Camavinga. Real Madrid finished with the higher expected goals (approximately 1.95 to Barcelona’s 1.19) despite conceding 62 per cent possession.

Barcelona lined up with Joan García in goal; Xavi Espart (Alejandro Balde 30’), Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, João Cancelo; Rodri, Pedri, Fermín López (Frenkie de Jong 74’); Lamine Yamal, Raphinha (Gabriel Jesus 86’), Anthony Gordon (Karim Adeyemi 85’). Real Madrid fielded Andriy Lunin; Federico Valverde (Denzel Dumfries 62’), Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella; Aurélien Tchouaméni, Bernardo Silva (Eduardo Camavinga 80’), Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler (Trent Alexander-Arnold 90+4’), Yan Diomande (Carlos Espí 90+4’); Kylian Mbappé. Referee Juan Martínez Munuera issued yellow cards to Tchouaméni, Gordon, Huijsen, Balde, Adeyemi and Mbappé.

The victory reopens the La Liga title race at a moment when Barcelona’s early dominance had looked formidable. With the winter schedule approaching, the margin is now narrow enough that subsequent matches will carry heightened stakes.
