Nigeria Education Minister Orders Immediate Teacher Recruitment for Kano Bilingual Schools
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has directed immediate preparations for teacher recruitment and other operational requirements for bilingual schools in Kano State to ensure the institutions open as scheduled in September.
Dr Alausa made the announcement during a strategic inspection of major Federal Government education projects across Kano State on July 20, 2026. He emphasised that the expansion of bilingual schools forms a key part of efforts to address the challenge of out-of-school children and strengthen learning infrastructure nationwide.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Education. He inspected the Bilingual School in Ungogo, expressing satisfaction with progress that has reached about 90 percent completion and remains on track for delivery by the end of next month.
Preparations are also underway for a third bilingual school to commence academic activities at the start of the 2026 session, while a fourth is expected to become operational by June 2027. Dr Alausa described the bilingual school initiative as one of the government’s most impactful responses to integrating Almajiri and other vulnerable children into formal education while equipping them with essential knowledge and skills.
He highlighted positive outcomes from the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, noting that more than one million out-of-school children have returned to classrooms in the last 24 months. “Beyond bringing children back to school, the administration is focused on ensuring they remain in school through improved teaching, better learning environments and sustained support,” he said.
During the visit to the JICA-supported Junior Secondary School in Lenge, Tofa Local Government Area, the Minister inspected ongoing construction of classrooms, perimeter fencing and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities. Upon completion, the junior secondary school will relocate to the new structures, with the existing buildings converted into a primary school. The Federal Government will support furnishing and additional renovations.
At Federal Government College, Kano, Dr Alausa commissioned a newly renovated digital e-library equipped with solar power, air conditioning, quality lighting and nearly 80 computer workstations. He noted that the administration inherited 36 abandoned e-library projects across Unity Colleges, of which 16 have now been fully rehabilitated through UBEC intervention.
The Minister interacted with students at the college, praising their confidence and academic outlook, and addressed the proposed Public Private Partnership Land Swap initiative.
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna, commended the Federal Government’s sustained interventions and described the partnership with the state as instrumental to improvements in access, infrastructure and learning outcomes. He highlighted Governor Abba Yusuf’s declaration of a state of emergency in education.
Dr Alausa was accompanied by Minister of State for Education Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, the Executive Secretary of NERDC, and other senior officials.
