China’s 24 Hour TP200 UAV Completes Maiden Flight

A Chinese-developed multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicle designed for prolonged high-altitude operations successfully completed its maiden flight on July 26, 2026, marking a milestone for domestically produced civil drones built to airworthiness standards.

The TP200, independently developed by Yi-Tong UAV System Co., Ltd., took off in Yantai City in eastern Shandong Province. During the test, the aircraft maintained a stable and controllable attitude, with climb altitude, cruising speed and other key parameters meeting design specifications.

Described as China’s first tonne-class multi-functional long-endurance civil UAV developed in accordance with airworthiness requirements, the TP200 features a high-aspect-ratio high-wing layout optimised for long-endurance, high-altitude missions. It can remain airborne for more than 24 hours while fully loaded.

Company and media reports list a maximum range of up to 3,000 kilometres (approximately 2,000 kilometres at maximum payload), a practical service ceiling of about 7,000 metres, a maximum cruise speed of around 200 km/h, and short takeoff and landing capability requiring as little as 300 metres of runway, including operations from unpaved surfaces.

The aircraft has a fuselage length of approximately 6.05 metres, a wingspan of 10 metres, a maximum takeoff weight of about 700 kilograms and a payload capacity of 200 kilograms. Its modular, multi-configuration design allows rapid switching of mission payloads and operational modes, aiming to improve equipment reuse rates, enhance versatility and lower procurement and maintenance costs compared with single-purpose systems.

Yi-Tong UAV System Co., Ltd., established in 2021 and backed by Yantai Yeda Economic Development Group, specialises in large unmanned transport aircraft. Its product lineup includes the TP series of fixed-wing platforms and TR series vertical takeoff and landing models, targeted at logistics, emergency response and specialised missions. The TP200’s successful first flight validates overall design and systems integration, with the chief designer noting excellent short-field performance and greater-than-expected stability.

Intended applications span maritime economy tasks such as long-range patrols, near-shore search and rescue, and routine coastline monitoring; disaster prevention and mitigation including weather modification, meteorological observation, drought relief and rain enhancement; emergency delivery of relief supplies to remote mountainous areas and islands; and public-service roles covering forest and grassland fire patrols, land surveying and mapping, and ecological monitoring. Officials and developers highlight its potential for all-weather, wide-coverage low-altitude operations, including possible utility for coastal or mountainous regions in Southeast Asia.

The flight comes as China seeks to expand its low-altitude economy and civil UAV capabilities. State media and industry reports position the TP200 as a step toward moving large unmanned aircraft from specialised uses into scaled government and commercial service. Further testing and certification processes are expected as the program advances.
