Super Eagles captain and Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been thrown into mourning following the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, who was killed in a fatal road traffic accident in Delta State on Tuesday, 26 January.
Reports indicate that the late Mr Ndidi — a retired military officer — was involved in a serious crash in Umunede, a town along a high‑risk route in the state. He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor, where he was confirmed dead.
Beşiktaş confirmed the tragedy in an official statement posted on X:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident. May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”
The message was shared in both English and Turkish as the club expressed solidarity with its player.
Recent Personal Tribute
The loss comes months after Ndidi captained Nigeria to a third‑place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where he scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles.
He had emotionally dedicated that goal — a headed effort against Tunisia — to his father.
Speaking in Morocco at the time, Ndidi said:
“The celebration came from my dad because he was always talking about Kanu Nwankwo… it came to my head, and I said I was going to do it for my dad.”
Road Safety Concerns in Delta
Road accidents remain a major public safety concern in Nigeria. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) highlights thousands of yearly fatalities linked to:
- Speeding
- Poor road conditions
- Reckless driving
- Inadequate vehicle maintenance
Routes around Umunede, including the Benin–Asaba highway corridor, have repeatedly been identified as particularly dangerous.
Tributes and Reactions
Though the Ndidi family has not issued an official statement as of Tuesday afternoon, condolences continue to pour in from:
- The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)
- Beşiktaş teammates
- Fellow Super Eagles players
- Supporters across social media
Fans have expressed sympathy and prayers for strength for Wilfred Ndidi and his family during this period of grief.
