Algeria produced a determined second-half comeback to defeat Jordan 2-1 at Levi’s Stadium, securing their first World Cup victory in 12 years and keeping alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

After falling behind to a well-taken first-half goal, the Desert Warriors showed character and tactical sharpness to turn the game around. Two goals from set pieces in the final 21 minutes proved decisive in a match that highlighted both Algeria’s attacking quality and Jordan’s spirited debut performance.

Jordan stunned the North Africans in the 36th minute when midfielder Nizar Al-Rashdan fired home a clinical finish from the edge of the box, assisted by Mousa Al-Tamari. Algeria had dominated possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Jordanian defence. Coach adjustments at half-time, including the introduction of Nabil Bentaleb and striker Nadhir Benbouali, shifted the momentum.

The equaliser arrived in the 69th minute when captain Riyad Mahrez delivered an inviting corner and Benbouali rose powerfully to head home. Algeria then found the winner in the 82nd minute. Substitute Anis Hadj Moussa swung in another dangerous corner, and after a deflection, Amine Gouiri poked the ball past the goalkeeper from close range. VAR checked for offside but allowed the goal to stand.

Algeria held on despite late pressure from Jordan, who showed impressive fight in their first-ever World Cup appearance. The victory moves Algeria onto three points in Group J, while Jordan are eliminated after two defeats.

Statistically, Algeria were dominant, controlling 72% of possession and creating far more chances but it was their clinical edge from set pieces and renewed intensity after the break that made the difference. Ramy Bensebaini anchored the defence impressively, while Mahrez and Ibrahim Maza provided the creative spark.

The result carries special significance for Algerian football. It ends a long wait since their last World Cup win in 2014 and reignites belief among fans across the country and the wider African continent. For Jordan, despite the defeat, moments of quality and organisation against stronger opposition offer encouragement for the future of football in the region.

Group J remains wide open heading into the final round of matches. Argentina have already secured top spot with six points, and Algeria will now face Austria in a high-stakes encounter that could decide who advances, either as runners-up or as one of the best third-placed teams.

A positive result would send the Desert Warriors through to the round of 32.
