Brazil were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against a determined Morocco side in their Group C opener at MetLife Stadium on June 13, 2026.
The result extends Brazil’s unbeaten run in World Cup opening matches to 21 games, but it also highlights the challenges Carlo Ancelotti’s side will face in their quest for a sixth world title.
Morocco took a shock lead in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari produced a composed finish, delicately chipping Alisson after a sharp counter-attack started by Brahim Díaz. Brazil responded quickly, with Vinícius Júnior levelling the score in the 32nd minute through a moment of pure individual quality. The Real Madrid forward cut inside from the left and curled a powerful right-footed shot into the far top corner, marking his second World Cup goal.
The first half was open and high-tempo, with Brazil creating several dangerous moments, including a spectacular acrobatic volley from Lucas Paquetá that was brilliantly saved by Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The second half became more fragmented and physical, with Morocco defending deep and effectively, frustrating Brazil’s attempts to find a winner.
The draw leaves Group C wide open. While Brazil showed flashes of their attacking talent (particularly through Vinícius, Raphinha and Paquetá), they lacked the cutting edge needed to break down a well-organised Moroccan defence. Morocco, runners-up at the 2022 tournament and ”African champions”, once again demonstrated why they are difficult opponents on the big stage.
