Ukraine has successfully returned 157 of its citizens from Russian captivity in the first prisoner exchange of 2026, marking the first such swap in approximately four months.
The exchange, confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, is viewed as a significant breakthrough following a prolonged pause in negotiations.
The exchange was a reciprocal “157 for 157” arrangement mediated by the United States during the second round of peace talks in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. While broader discussions on ending the conflict reportedly yielded no major territorial breakthroughs, the humanitarian outcome has provided a rare moment of hope for families across Ukraine.
Who Returned Home?
The repatriated group consists of 150 military personnel and 7 civilians. This exchange is particularly notable for the return of individuals who had been held in what Ukrainian authorities describe as extremely harsh conditions for years.
-
Mariupol Defenders: More than half of those freed were captured during the intense siege of Mariupol in the spring of 2022.
-
Chornobyl Personnel: At least one National Guard member taken during the early seizure of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was included.
-
Illegal Convictions: Nineteen of the returned defenders had been “unlawfully sentenced” by Russian courts, with 15 previously serving life sentences.
-
The Youngest and Oldest: The youngest returnee is now 23 years old (captured at 19), while the oldest freed defender is 63 years old.
-
Long-Term Captivity: 139 of the freed individuals had been held since the first year of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
The Abu Dhabi Negotiations
The swap was a direct outcome of trilateral talks involving delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who led the American mediation team alongside Jared Kushner, highlighted the exchange as a “tangible result” of sustained diplomatic engagement. However, the talks concluded without a breakthrough on the “deadlock” regarding territory, with Moscow continuing to demand the cession of the Donetsk region.
“For a long time, it was not possible to unblock exchanges; now the process is set in motion, and it is crucial that it continues.” — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
