Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, officially transitioned its generative video tool out of beta on Monday, February 2, 2026, with the full release of Grok Imagine 1.0.

The update, which Musk has described as the company’s “most significant leap in generative media to date,” introduces 10-second high-definition (720p) video generation paired with an advanced native audio engine, placing the tool in direct competition with OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo 3.1.

The launch follows an unprecedented month of user engagement. According to internal data released by xAI, the system has already generated 1.245 billion videos in the 30 days leading up to the official 1.0 rollout. This massive volume underscores the rapid adoption of AI video tools among the X (formerly Twitter) user base, where Grok is currently integrated. The surge in usage coincides with xAI’s broader corporate realignment; early on Tuesday, SpaceX announced it had acquired xAI in an all-stock deal valuing the combined entity at roughly $1.25 trillion, a move intended to leverage Starlink’s global satellite bandwidth for high-compute AI processing.

Technical Breakthroughs: Audio-Visual Synchronization

Grok Imagine 1.0 represents a major upgrade over previous iterations, which were largely restricted to shorter, silent clips. The new model leverages technology from Hotshot, the video startup acquired by xAI in 2025, to solve the “flicker” and consistency issues that have historically plagued generative video.

A core differentiator in the 1.0 release is the Native Audio Integration. Unlike competitors that often require secondary AI tools to add sound, Grok Imagine 1.0 generates synchronized audio as part of the initial render. This includes:

  • Expressive Dialogue: Characters within generated clips can now speak with realistic emotional inflection and mouth-syncing.

  • Contextual Soundscapes: The AI automatically adds immersive background music and environmental sound effects that correspond to the visual action.

  • Extended Duration: Video length has been doubled to 10 seconds per clip, with high visual consistency maintained from the first frame to the last.

Market Positioning: The Price War for Developers

Beyond consumer features, xAI is aggressively targeting the developer market with the Grok Imagine API. Launched in late January, the API has already topped the Artificial Analysis Video Arena leaderboard in categories of quality-to-cost efficiency and generation latency.

By pricing the service at approximately $4.20 per minute of video (including audio), xAI is positioning itself as the high-volume, low-cost alternative to industry incumbents. In comparison, Google’s Veo 3.1 Preview is priced at $12.00 per minute, while OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro remains at a premium $30.00 per minute. This pricing strategy appears designed to fuel the next wave of AI-native content creation, from marketing agencies to the emergent “AI agent” communities that have begun launching their own media assets on platforms like Solana.

Safety and Global Compliance

The release arrives amid a tightening regulatory environment for generative AI. In response to concerns regarding deepfakes and non-consensual content, xAI has reinforced its “maximally truthful” protocols. The company stated that Grok Imagine 1.0 includes enhanced metadata tagging to identify AI-generated content and more robust filtering for prompts involving public figures. However, the tool remains more permissive than many of its peers, a hallmark of Musk’s “anti-censorship” approach to AI development.

The full 10-second, 720p generation with enhanced audio is currently available to SuperGrok subscribers on the web and mobile apps, while basic tiers retain access to shorter, 5-second generations.
