Golf legend Tiger Woods has been arrested on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after his Land Rover rolled over on a suburban road near his home here, authorities said. No one was injured in the two-vehicle crash.
The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. ET on March 27 in the 280 block of South Beach Road. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, a pickup truck towing a small pressure-cleaning trailer was traveling northbound and slowing to turn into a driveway when Woods, driving a dark-colored Land Rover at a high rate of speed, attempted to pass it. The SUV clipped the rear of the trailer, causing Woods’ vehicle to roll onto its driver’s side and slide along the road.
Woods, 50, was able to crawl out of the passenger door of the overturned vehicle. Deputies noted he exhibited signs of impairment, including lethargic behavior and slow, slurred speech. He was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Martin County Jail.
At the jail, Woods submitted to a breathalyzer test, which registered 0.00 – indicating no alcohol in his system. However, he refused to provide a urine sample for further testing to detect possible drugs or medications. Investigators believe the impairment was related to some type of medication or drug, though no specific substances were identified at the scene, and no medications were visibly found in the vehicle.
Woods faces three misdemeanor charges: DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Under Florida law, refusing a urine test in a DUI investigation can lead to an automatic driver’s license suspension. He was booked into jail and is expected to be released after processing.
The truck driver was not injured, and there were no passengers in either vehicle. Skid marks were visible at the scene, and photos released by authorities and local media showed the Land Rover on its side.
Recent Context and Woods’ Health History
The crash comes just days after Woods made a limited return to competitive golf. On March 24, 2026, he participated in the TGL finals in Palm Beach Gardens as part of the Jupiter Links GC team, which lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club. Woods has been recovering from multiple injuries in recent years, including a ruptured Achilles tendon in March 2025 and back surgery in October 2025.
This is not Woods’ first high-profile vehicular incident. In May 2017, he was arrested in nearby Jupiter after being found asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes with the engine running and flat tires. He had a mix of prescription painkillers (including Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, and Ambien) and THC in his system following multiple back surgeries.
Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving as part of a diversion program.
In February 2021, Woods suffered severe leg and ankle injuries in a single-vehicle rollover crash in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, while driving to a TV shoot. He required emergency surgery with rods, screws, and pins inserted in his right leg. That crash was attributed to speed and road conditions, not impairment.
Woods has a well-documented history of back and leg issues stemming from years of elite competition, including multiple spinal fusions and knee surgeries.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Budensiek described Woods as cooperative during questioning but emphasized the seriousness of the charges. No official statement has been released from Woods or his representatives as of Saturday morning.
