Alibaba Launches Advanced AI Model

Chinese technology giant Alibaba has unveiled its most capable artificial intelligence model to date, the Qwen3.8-Max, which ranks among the largest open-weight systems developed in China and trails only a handful of global leaders on key performance benchmarks.

The new model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, the numerical settings that enable pattern recognition, answer generation and task execution. That figure places it close to the 2.8 trillion parameters of rival Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3, released last month. While parameter count alone does not determine superiority, it remains a closely watched indicator of the scale of computing resources and training data supporting advanced systems. Chinese firms frequently publish these figures to attract developers, in contrast to the closed-source approaches of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, which do not disclose parameter counts.

Qwen3.8-Max debuted on the crowdsourced comparison platform Arena.AI, where it immediately became the highest-ranked Chinese text model, though it still trails Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and three Opus variants. On the platform’s visual analysis leaderboard, which assesses models that process images and other visual data, it ranked second worldwide, behind only a Claude Fable 5 variant. Both Qwen3.8-Max and Kimi K3 support text, image and video inputs and can process up to one million tokens in a single context window, allowing them to handle lengthy legal documents, large software codebases or hundreds of pages of material at once.

Alibaba said the model employs a mixture-of-experts architecture that activates only specialised portions of the system for each request. As a result, just 95 billion parameters are engaged at any given time, lowering computational costs and reducing response latency. The company further reported that Qwen3.8-Max completed a full software-engineering project in 16 days. The model is scheduled for release next week through Alibaba Cloud’s Model Studio platform.

The launch underscores the rapid, competitive race among Chinese technology companies to develop powerful yet commercially viable open-weight AI systems. These models have become a major force in the global open-weight ecosystem, as firms seek to balance scale with efficiency while developers worldwide evaluate the latest offerings.
