Barcelona Crush Elche 5-0 in Opener
Defending champions Barcelona opened their La Liga campaign with a ruthless 5-0 victory away at Elche on Sunday night, signalling clear intent as they begin the defence of their title.
Captain Raphinha and midfielder Fermín López each scored twice, while summer signing Karim Adeyemi marked his competitive debut with a goal. Fellow newcomer Anthony Gordon provided two assists after coming off the bench. Four minutes later Gordon collected a long ball, raced into the area and squared for López to tap into an empty net. The fifth arrived in the 79th minute when young midfielder Xavi Espart fed López, who controlled with his back to goal, spun past Federico Redondo and smashed an unstoppable shot beyond Dituro.
Late substitutions brought on Jules Koundé and João Cancelo as Barcelona coasted to the final whistle. Goalkeeper Joan García was rarely tested and preserved a clean sheet.
The performance underscored the quality of Barcelona’s summer recruitment, with Adeyemi’s goal and Gordon’s assists providing immediate returns. Raphinha’s leadership and López’s clinical edge highlighted the squad’s depth even without a full-strength side.
