Belgium Beats USA 4-1 to End Co-Hosts’ Campaign

Belgium delivered a clinical 4-1 victory over the United States in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 6 July at Lumen Field in Seattle, bringing the co-hosts’ tournament to an abrupt end.

The result ended American hopes of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002 and exposed ongoing challenges against high-quality European opposition.

Belgium, who had advanced from Group G and defeated Senegal 3-2 after extra time in the previous round, exploited defensive vulnerabilities and showed sharp attacking quality. The United States had reached this stage with momentum, topping their group and beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 despite playing much of the second half with ten men after a red card to striker Folarin Balogun, whose suspension was later pushed foward controversially.

Post-match scenes on the pitch captured the depth of the disappointment. American players, including captain Christian Pulisic in the No. 10 jersey and defender Alex Freeman, stood with hands on heads or appeared visibly dejected. Others received consolation from coaching staff as the full weight of the result sank in. Coach Mauricio Pochettino was seen offering support amid the immediate aftermath.

This outcome followed a March 2026 friendly in Atlanta in which Belgium had routed the United States 5-2. Pochettino had described that earlier defeat as a “good reality check,” but the World Cup rematch proved far more decisive. Belgium’s clinical finishing and ability to punish transitions stood in contrast to the Americans’ inability to convert possession into sustained threat.

Belgium now advances to the quarterfinals. For the United States, the 4-1 defeat closes a campaign that began with promise on home soil but ultimately fell short against a motivated and technically superior opponent.
