Colombia advanced to the round of 32 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over DR Congo at Estadio Akron, thanks to a late goal from Daniel Muñoz that rewarded their persistence against a resilient opponent.
The win takes Colombia to the top of Group K with six points from two matches and guarantees their place in the knockout stage with one group game still to play. It also marks a strong return to the World Cup’s latter stages for a talented side blending experience and youth.
Muñoz, the Crystal Palace right-back, scored the decisive goal in the 76th minute. Substitute Juan Fernando Quintero delivered a precise pass after Jefferson Lerma won a midfield duel, Jhon Córdoba held the ball up well, and Muñoz surged into the box to fire a left-footed shot that took a slight deflection before finding the net. The defender celebrated wildly, pointing to the sky in front of the yellow-clad Colombian fans.
DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi delivered a heroic performance, making eight saves to frustrate Colombia throughout the match. He denied efforts from James Rodríguez, Luis Díaz, Johan Mojica, and others, keeping the score level until the late breakthrough. Colombia had two further goals disallowed – one involving Luis Díaz for offside, adding to the tension in the closing stages.
Camilo Vargas made a crucial late save on a Chancel Mbemba header to preserve the clean sheet as DR Congo pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Under coach Néstor Lorenzo, Colombia showed their trademark high pressing and quick transitions. Luis Díaz remained a constant threat on the left flank, while James Rodríguez, appearing in his 10th World Cup match, was substituted at half-time but helped set the platform. The introduction of fresh legs from the bench proved decisive.
For DR Congo, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, the tournament ends with pride. They earned a creditable 1-1 draw against Portugal in their opener and showed impressive organisation in a compact 5-3-2 setup.
Colombia will now face Portugal on June 27 in Miami in what promises to be a high-stakes clash for top spot in the group. A draw would likely secure first place, though even a defeat could still see them through depending on other results.
Meanwhile, DR Congo will play their final group match against Uzbekistan as they bid to finish their debut campaign on a positive note and keep slim hopes of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams alive.
