Morocco has delivered another memorable chapter in its World Cup story, eliminating the Netherlands with a 1-1 draw after extra time and a hard-fought penalty shootout victory at Estadio BBVA.

Issa Diop’s stoppage-time header in the 91st minute forced the decider, capping a resilient Atlas Lions performance that mirrored their remarkable 2022 run. Cody Gakpo had given the Dutch a 72nd-minute lead with a clinical finish from Crysencio Summerville’s assist. The forward broke down in tears on the sideline shortly after scoring, embraced by teammates and staff following the recent loss of his unborn child with his partner.

Morocco refused to yield. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a precise cross, and Diop surged forward from centre-back to power home his first international goal, sending Moroccan fans into ecstasy and pushing the match into extra time. The Atlas Lions dominated large stretches, enjoying significant possession and outshooting the Dutch, particularly in the second half and additional periods.

Extra time remained goalless despite end-to-end action and a brief delay when Moroccan forward Ismael Saibari received treatment for a facial cut. The contest moved to penalties, historically unkind territory for the Netherlands. Both sides showed early nerves, with Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui striking the bar and Netherlands’ Justin Kluivert hitting the post.
