President Donald Trump has unveiled a new federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime in America’s major cities, directing the Department of Justice to distribute $300 million in grants to selected municipalities for hiring police officers, modernising equipment, training, and tackling issues such as substance abuse, youth crime and repeat offenders.

Speaking from the Oval Office in a video address released on Wednesday, Trump described the “Model Cities Initiative” as the next major step in what he called the most successful war on crime in American history. He highlighted last year’s record drop in the murder rate (the largest single-year decline ever recorded) which he said brought it to the lowest level in 125 years. The president also pointed to a 60% reduction in fentanyl crossing the southern border as evidence of progress.

“For the next 90 days, any city or local government representing a population of more than 100,000 people can apply to take part in the fight,” Trump said. He urged local representatives to apply via the Department of Justice website at www.justice.gov.

The initiative targets metropolitan areas across the country, offering funding to improve quality of life for residents through enhanced law enforcement presence and prevention programmes. Trump framed it as a continuation of efforts to restore law and order “from Washington to Memphis to New Orleans to our southern border.”

The announcement comes as Trump continues to place public safety and border security at the centre of his administration’s domestic agenda. While official crime statistics from the FBI and major city police departments have shown notable declines in homicide rates in many urban centres over the past two years, some observers caution that broader violent crime trends remain mixed and that long-term reductions will require sustained local, state and federal coordination.

Details on exactly how cities will be selected for the grants, the specific criteria for funding allocation, and timelines for disbursement have not yet been fully outlined by the Department of Justice. The programme appears designed to incentivise cities to align with federal priorities on policing and crime prevention, though participation is voluntary.

Trump’s remarks echo themes from his first term and 2024 campaign, where he frequently highlighted urban crime rates and promised decisive federal action. The new initiative arrives amid ongoing debates over policing, criminal justice reform and the allocation of federal resources to local governments.

The White House has positioned the Model Cities Initiative as a direct investment in public safety and community well-being. Supporters see it as a practical response to resident concerns in high-crime areas, while critics may question whether grant-based funding can deliver lasting results without addressing deeper socioeconomic factors.

As applications open, city leaders across the country will now assess whether to participate in the programme. The coming days are expected to bring more detailed guidance from the Justice Department on eligibility, reporting requirements and expected outcomes.
