Osun APC Rejects Adeleke’s Allegations as Baseless, Accuses Governor of Meddling in Local Government Affairs

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has strongly rejected claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola is using federal institutions and banks to unlawfully extend the tenure of APC-elected local government chairmen and councillors.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s claims that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola is using federal agencies and banks to impose illegal tenure extensions for APC‑elected local government officials.

The party described the allegations as “baseless misinformation” aimed at deflecting attention from the administration’s own performance failures.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Kola Olabisi, the APC said Adeleke’s remarks — made during a statewide broadcast the previous day — were a deliberate distortion of facts intended to confuse the public and avoid accountability.

APC Reasserts Court of Appeal Ruling

The party claims that the Court of Appeal judgment of 10 February 2025 reinstated APC‑elected council chairmen and councillors, a ruling Adeleke never challenged at the Supreme Court.

According to Olabisi:

“One would have expected a state executive honest enough to admit that beyond the issue of tenure, the reinstated APC council chairmen and councillors are challenging the legality of another election conducted while their tenure was still valid.”

The APC maintains that the reinstated officials remain in office pending the final resolution of all ongoing litigations. It accused the Adeleke administration and its allies of initiating suits that have stalled the release of federal allocations, creating undue hardship for the councils and their communities.

Rejection of Adeleke’s Claims

The party denied that former Governor Oyetola had weaponised federal institutions or banks — including the Nigeria Police Force and UBA — to manipulate tenure or induce hardship in Osun.

Olabisi added:

“Governor Adeleke should stop acting as a meddlesome interloper in local government affairs. He lacks locus standi to make a case for them, given the complete autonomy granted by the Supreme Court.”

The APC also cautioned Adeleke against continually blaming Oyetola for perceived governance failures, describing the former governor’s record in infrastructure, education, health and economic management as “verifiably written in gold”.

Call for Respect for Judicial Decisions

The opposition party urged the Adeleke administration to comply with the Court of Appeal ruling and stop undermining local government autonomy. It called on the public to resist what it described as attempts to subvert grassroots governance for political gain.

Current Status

As of 27 January 2026, both sides maintain parallel claims:

  • The APC insists that its reinstated chairmen and councillors remain legally in office under the Appeal Court ruling.
  • The Adeleke administration maintains that their tenure expired on 22 October 2025.

The legal deadlock, combined with ongoing cases, continues to delay federal allocations to local councils.

The dispute underscores intensifying political rivalry in Osun State between the ruling Accord Party and the opposition APC, with control of local government structures at the heart of the conflict.
