The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has announced that its president, Samuel Eto’o, has been suspended for four matches and fined $20,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary committee.

The sanction follows alleged misbehavior during Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final defeat to Morocco.

CAF confirmed it had investigated incidents during the quarter-finals involving both Cameroon vs Morocco and Algeria vs Nigeria, though it did not publicly specify the details. The only widely reported flashpoint was Eto’o’s angry gestures directed at Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa, with CAF president Patrice Motsepe nearby at the time.

FECAFOOT issued a strongly worded response, saying it had “taken note” of the decision but criticised the ruling as lacking explicit justification.

The federation argued that the “expedited procedure raises serious concerns regarding fundamental requirements of a fair trial” and reaffirmed its “unwavering support” for Eto’o while calling for credible disciplinary justice.

Eto’o, a legendary former striker for the Indomitable Lions and a Ballon d’Or runner-up, has led FECAFOOT since 2021. Despite controversies during his tenure, he remains a popular figure among Cameroonian fans.

Cameroon were eliminated by Morocco in the quarter-finals, and the suspension now applies to both domestic and continental fixtures, potentially limiting Eto’o’s presence at future national team matches.
