The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that Nigeria recorded 10,446 road accidents across the country in 2025, marking a 9.2% increase compared to the 9,570 crashes reported in 2024.

The figures were revealed by FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, February 4, as part of the Corps’ 2025 Annual Road Traffic Crash Report and Ember Months Campaign review.

Despite the rise in total crashes, fatalities dropped from 5,421 in 2024 to 5,289 in 2025 – a reduction of 2.4%. Corps Marshal Mohammed attributed the decline in deaths to intensified enforcement, improved rescue operations, and stricter compliance with traffic rules throughout the year.

High-Risk Corridors and “Big Five” Offenses

The FRSC identified specific corridors and behaviors that disproportionately contribute to the nation’s road safety challenges.

High-Risk Corridors (Highest Fatality Rates):

  • Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Darazo–Potiskum: Recorded 49 deaths during the December festive period alone.

  • Zuba–Kaduna–Zaria: Recorded 39 deaths and 67 injuries.

  • Abuja–Lokoja: Recorded 28 deaths.

  • Benin–Asaba–Awka: Recorded 12 deaths and 17 injuries.

The “Big Five” Traffic Offenses:

These violations are responsible for over 70% of fatal and serious crashes nationwide:

  1. Speed Violation: Identified as the single greatest threat, accounting for 41% of identified causes in December 2025.

  2. Dangerous Driving

  3. Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

  4. Wrong-Way Driving (Route Violation)

  5. Overloading

2026 Strategic Shift: Intelligence-Led Enforcement

To address these persistent issues, the Corps Marshal has declared 2026 a year of “Renewed Commitment, Professionalism, and Improved Service Delivery.” Key initiatives include:

  • Crash Intelligence Desks: Commands nationwide have been directed to establish specialized desks to analyze crash data for proactive deployment.

  • Targeted Communication: Moving away from general awareness to behavior – change communication tailored to commercial drivers, fleet operators, and motorcyclists.

  • Community Engagement: Partnering with religious and community leaders to reinforce road safety education at the grassroots level.

  • Speed Management: Elevating speed limit device enforcement for commercial vehicles to a national priority.

“The challenge before us is no longer response alone, but prevention, compliance, and deterrence.” — Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed
