Nigeria has recorded a major leap in global artificial intelligence readiness, rising 31 places from 103rd in 2023 to 72nd out of 195 countries in the Oxford Government AI Readiness Index 2025, placing the nation in the 37th percentile worldwide.

Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, celebrated the achievement, crediting deliberate policy execution under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Tijani described AI as “national productivity infrastructure” and highlighted initiatives such as the AI Collective, AI Trust, and N-ATLAS (National Artificial Intelligence & Technology Advisory Leadership Strategy) as key drivers of progress.

Strongest Areas of Progress:

  • 35th globally in Policy Capacity — anchored by Nigeria’s clear National AI Strategy.
  • 49th in Development & Diffusion — reflecting growing strength in talent, research, and innovation.

The minister framed the achievement as inseparable from Nigeria’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy, with AI-driven productivity across every sector. He posed the challenge: “Can Nigeria move into the global top 50 for AI capability?”.
