OpenAI has unveiled plans to introduce advertising into ChatGPT while expanding its affordable subscription tier, ChatGPT Go, to the United States and all regions where the service is available.

The dual move is designed to broaden access to advanced AI features while generating new revenue streams to offset rising infrastructure costs.

ChatGPT Go, priced at $8 per month in the U.S., offers expanded messaging, image creation, file uploads, and memory capabilities. It provides higher usage limits than the free tier but remains below premium options such as ChatGPT Plus. Initially launched in India in August 2025, the tier has since rolled out to 171 countries and now enters global availability with standardized pricing.

To support broader access, OpenAI will begin testing ads in the coming weeks for logged-in adult users in the U.S. on the free and Go tiers. Ads will appear at the bottom of responses when relevant to the conversation—for example, a sponsored product suggestion after a recipe query. They will be clearly labeled, separated from organic answers, and will not influence ChatGPT’s outputs. Higher-tier subscriptions including Pro, Business, and Enterprise will remain ad-free.

The company emphasized strict principles: ads will not affect responses, user conversations and data will not be sold to advertisers, personalization can be disabled, and users can clear ad-related data or opt for ad-free experiences via paid tiers. Ads will not appear for users under 18, nor alongside sensitive topics such as health, mental health, or politics. Testing will begin with contextual sponsored recommendations, with potential future formats allowing limited interactivity.

OpenAI framed the initiative as part of its mission to make artificial general intelligence benefit humanity by subsidizing free and low-cost access. Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, stressed that user trust remains paramount, noting that ads could evolve into more helpful experiences than traditional formats while offering small businesses new ways to reach audiences.

The announcement comes amid mounting operational costs for AI development and infrastructure, with OpenAI seeking sustainable models to balance accessibility and financial viability.
