The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent public alert cautioning Nigerian citizens against falling victim to deceptive schemes that recruit them into foreign armed conflicts. The warning highlights a growing number of cases where Nigerians are lured abroad under false pretenses and then coerced into combat roles.
In a press statement released on Sunday, February 15, 2026, by Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Ministry expressed deep concern over reports of individuals being misled with promises of high-paying jobs, security positions, educational opportunities, or fast-track migration and citizenship offers. Once abroad, victims are reportedly pressured into signing military service contracts, with travel documents confiscated and freedom of movement restricted.
Recruitment Tactics and Legal Violations
The statement noted that recruitment tactics often involve intermediaries or agents who arrange travel under tourist or other non-military visa categories. Victims are then deployed to active conflict zones, exposing them to extreme danger. The Ministry emphasized that such activities not only endanger lives but also violate Nigerian and international laws prohibiting mercenary involvement and unauthorized foreign enlistment.
Government Response and Advisory
The government is actively engaging domestic and international partners to investigate these incidents and raise awareness of the risks. Nigerian missions abroad have been instructed to increase consular vigilance, provide timely advisory services, and assist citizens who may have been affected.
The Ministry urged parents, guardians, community leaders, schools, and educational institutions to educate young Nigerians about these dangers. Citizens were advised to verify all overseas job, study, or migration opportunities through official government channels and to report any suspicious recruitment offers to appropriate authorities immediately.
Official Position on Citizen Safety
The release reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to protecting the safety, welfare, and dignity of its citizens at home and abroad. It reiterated that participation in foreign armed conflicts outside approved government frameworks is done at the individual’s own risk and will not receive official support or protection.
