Authorities have identified the suspect in Tuesday’s mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a connected residence as a transgender teenager.

The attacker, reported by multiple media outlets as Jesse Strang (using she/her pronouns based on family confirmation and associated online profiles), died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing the total fatalities to 10 (9 victims + the suspect).

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed the suspect’s gender as female in early briefings but initially withheld the name pending family notification and verification. RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd told reporters the suspect has been identified, but motive remains unclear and investigators are still determining connections between the victims and the attacker.

The shooting occurred on February 10, 2026, in the afternoon when an active shooter alert was issued at the secondary school (grades 7–12). Police entering the building found six people shot dead. A seventh victim died from injuries en route to hospital. Two more bodies were discovered at a nearby private residence believed to be linked to the incident.

27 people were injured, with two in life-threatening condition requiring airlift to regional hospitals and others treated locally for non-life-threatening wounds.

Tumbler Ridge, a small coal-mining town of about 2,400 residents in the Rocky Mountain foothills (over 1,100 km north of Vancouver), remains in deep shock. Schools activated lockdowns during the incident and are closed for the week. Community support, including reunification efforts with the school district, is underway.

Eyewitness and Community Impact

Student Darian Quist told CBC he was in mechanics class when lockdown was announced. He initially thought it routine but soon received disturbing photos. “It set in what was happening,” Quist said. He stayed locked down over two hours until police escorted students out.

Darian’s mother, Shelley Quist, said upon reunion: “He’s not going to be out of my sight for a while now.”

Local journalist Trent Ernst, a former substitute teacher, told AFP: “There’s been troubled kids here in town before,” but nothing of this scale. One of his children had recently graduated from the school.

The municipality stated: “There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.”

Official Response

Prime Minister Mark Carney called the violence “horrific” and “devastating,” cancelling his Munich Security Conference attendance on Wednesday. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the acts as “unimaginable.”

RCMP northern district commander Ken Floyd said: “This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

Mass shootings are extremely rare in Canada due to strict gun laws, though isolated tragedies have occurred, including a vehicle attack in Vancouver in April 2025 that killed 11 at a Filipino cultural festival.

Police have not released the suspect’s age (reported as 17–18 by media) or further motive details, nor the ages of victims though investigations continue.

Context on Transgender Identity

Media reports, including Juno News citing direct contact with the suspect’s uncle Russell G. Strang, identified the suspect as transgender, using she/her pronouns in some associated online profiles. Initial police descriptions referred to the assailant as a woman wearing a dress with brown hair. The RCMP has not officially confirmed or commented on gender identity beyond the female designation at the scene.

The revelation has added complexity to public discussion, with some commentary focusing on mental health, social pressures, and access to support for transgender youth in remote communities. Others caution against speculation on motive or identity until the investigation concludes.
