ABUJA — The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on January 5, 2026, delivered a fresh shipment of defense equipment and operational materials to Nigeria aboard a Boeing 767 freighter that transited from Miami via South Carolina and Lagos.

The consignment is intended to support ongoing Nigerian operations against terrorist groups, including ISWAP and Boko Haram, and follows recent U.S. Tomahawk strikes on ISIS camps in Sokoto State on December 25, 2025, as well as Nigerian airstrikes in the Sambisa Forest.

Officials described the delivery as a sign of deepening security cooperation between the United States and Nigeria. Discussions are reportedly underway for Nigeria to acquire AH‑1Z Viper attack helicopters to bolster its counter‑insurgency capabilities, though no procurement agreement has been finalized.

The shipment has drawn mixed reactions at home. Many Nigerians on social media expressed gratitude for the material support, saying the equipment could strengthen operations against violent extremist groups. At the same time, critics warned of potential corruption risks in military procurement and questioned the long‑term strategic intentions behind increased U.S. involvement in the region.

The delivery builds on a series of recent military actions and diplomatic engagements aimed at curbing insurgent activity in northern and northeastern Nigeria. Observers say the partnership could accelerate operational gains if accompanied by transparency in procurement and sustained capacity‑building for Nigerian forces.
