Burkina Faso Posts Record 94 Tonnes Gold Output in 2025 Amid Mining Reforms and Energy Gains

Burkina Faso achieved historic highs in its mining and energy sectors during 2025, with national gold production surging to a record 94 tonnes — a sharp increase of more than 30 tonnes from 2024 levels — while electricity access expanded significantly through new grid connections.

Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries Yacouba Zabré Gouba presented these figures in his ministry’s 2025 performance contract evaluation, submitted to Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, reporting an overall achievement rate of 89.66%.

Mining Sector: Sovereignty and Formalization

The mining sector drove the standout results, fueled by sovereignty-oriented reforms under the transitional government. These included tighter state oversight of industrial operations, intensified crackdowns on fraud and illicit exports, and formalization of artisanal mining cooperatives to boost safety, productivity, and local revenue retention.

  • Artisanal Impact: Of the 94 tonnes produced, approximately 42–43 tonnes came from artisanal and semi-mechanized activities — often called “orpaillage” — highlighting successful integration of this informal sector into the formal economy.

  • Fiscal Revenue: Industrial mines contributed the balance, reinforcing gold’s role as a cornerstone export. The output generated an estimated 776 billion CFA francs (about $1.4 billion USD) in budgetary receipts, bolstering state finances amid economic pressures.

Energy Sector: Rural and Urban Electrification

In parallel, the energy sector advanced rural and urban electrification. Infrastructure rollouts featured over 165 km of high-voltage transmission lines and around 500 km of low-voltage distribution networks, addressing longstanding deficits and supporting broader development in remote areas.

  • New Connections: Nearly 160,000 additional households connected to the national grid in 2025.

  • Rural Reach: 131 rural villages gained power for the first time, laying the groundwork for industrial growth and improved living standards in remote areas.

Future Outlook for 2026

Looking to 2026, Minister Gouba outlined plans for restructuring the Bureau des Mines et de la Géologie (BUMIGEB) to improve efficiency and technical capacity, alongside further artisanal cooperative organization for enhanced compliance and output. These steps align with national priorities of economic sovereignty, local processing, and sustainable management.

Informed observers see the results as evidence of effective policy implementation in a resource-rich nation navigating regional realignments. The 2025 milestones provide a strong base for continued advancement in mining and energy infrastructure.
