Iran Warns of Retaliation as Hundreds Killed in Protests – UN Security Council Meets

Iranian Supreme Leader warns of retaliation

Iran has vowed to retaliate if the United States intervenes militarily, as reports from activists and BBC sources confirm hundreds of protesters killed in the country’s most significant unrest since the 2022 Mahsa Amini uprising.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned on Sunday that U.S. and Israeli military and shipping centres would become “legitimate targets” if Washington acts. The government declared three days of mourning, calling the dead “martyrs” in a “national battle against the U.S. and Israel.”

Key Developments

  • BBC footage showed ~180 body bags at a morgue near Tehran.
  • Human Rights Activist News Agency verified 495 protester deaths and 48 security personnel killed nationwide.
  • 10,600+ detained in two weeks.
  • Hospitals overwhelmed: one Tehran facility reported 38 deaths on arrival, many from head/heart shots; Rasht hospital received 70 bodies in one night.
  • Severe internet shutdown (worst since 2022); Starlink remains the main external access but is traceable.

Protests, initially sparked by soaring inflation, have escalated into demands for an end to clerical rule under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities label demonstrators “enemies of God”—a charge carrying the death penalty—and blame the unrest on U.S. and Israeli influence.

U.S. Position

President Donald Trump claimed Iranian leaders contacted him to negotiate but warned the U.S. “may have to act” before talks. He has been briefed on strike options including military, cyber, and sanctions.

International Reaction

  • UN Security Council held an emergency session (requested by Colombia, backed by China and Russia) under “Threats to International Peace.”
  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a “dangerous precedent” for the UN Charter.
  • Protests erupted in U.S. cities (Chicago, Seattle, NYC) condemning intervention.

Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi urged continued protests: “I am preparing to return… the day of victory is very near.”
