A Qatar Airways aircraft carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members made a safe emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Friday night after encountering a technical fault while flying through Nigerian airspace.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it activated its emergency response plan immediately after receiving distress alerts through its toll-free hotlines. The fully loaded aircraft triggered the alert mid-flight, prompting swift coordination among responders including LASEMA’s Command and Control Centre, LASAMBUS, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to a preliminary report signed by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the incident was linked to technical problems on board. The pilot executed a controlled landing on the runway, where emergency teams were already positioned. Eyewitnesses described tense moments as responders lined the strip and passengers braced for the descent.

All 260 people on board were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The aircraft sustained no significant damage and was later towed to the apron for inspection and repairs by the airline’s engineering crew. Recovery operations concluded without further complications.

Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) spokesperson Michael Achimugu confirmed that an “air return” had taken place, noting that further details would be provided. As of the latest reporting, Qatar Airways had not issued an official statement.

Aviation experts stressed that emergency landings of this nature are standard protocol when mid-flight faults occur, guided by pilot distress signals to air traffic control. The incident underscored the preparedness of Lagos emergency services in responding to potential risks and ensuring passenger safety.
