President Bola Ahmed Tinubu briefly stumbled and fell on Tuesday during an official welcome ceremony in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, before being immediately assisted back to his feet by aides and Turkish officials.

The incident occurred as Tinubu walked alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the reception at the Turkish presidential palace. Footage from the ceremony shows the Nigerian leader momentarily missing his step before aides swiftly intervened to steady him.

Tinubu had arrived in a black limousine as the Turkish military band played Nigeria’s national anthem, followed by Turkey’s. At one point, President Erdoğan was seen gently adjusting Tinubu’s posture to ensure he faced the band correctly before the formal review.

Diplomatic Visit Continues Despite Momentary Slip

The stumble did not disrupt the official programme. Tinubu proceeded with scheduled engagements as part of a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Turkey across key sectors.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the visit was designed to deepen cooperation in:

  • Security
  • Education
  • Social development
  • Innovation
  • Aviation

He added that discussions would also focus on finance, communication, trade, and investment, highlighting the strategic importance of economic and diplomatic ties between both countries.

Context of Tinubu’s Trip

Tinubu departed Abuja on Monday for Ankara, where he is expected to engage Turkish leaders and the business community on expanding Nigeria–Turkey collaboration.
The visit aligns with Nigeria’s broader diplomatic push to enhance international partnerships and investment prospects.
