Real Madrid Overwhelms Manchester City as Federico Valverde Scores First Half Hat Trick

Federico Valverde produced a sensational first-half hat-trick to give Real Madrid a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.

The Uruguayan midfielder struck in the 20th, 27th and 42nd minutes to put Álvaro Arbeloa’s side in full control ahead of next week’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium. Madrid’s performance was all the more remarkable given the absence of key attacking players Kylian Mbappé, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham through injury, underlining the squad’s depth and resilience.

Valverde opened the scoring with a precise low finish from the edge of the box after a swift exchange with Vinícius Júnior. He doubled the lead seven minutes later, pouncing on a defensive error to slot home from close range following a corner. His third goal, a thunderous 25-yard drive into the top corner, completed a memorable hat-trick – his first in the Champions League – and left City shell-shocked.

Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to respond. Erling Haaland was largely contained by Madrid’s compact midfield, anchored by Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni. City managed only four shots on target across the 90 minutes.

Arbeloa praised Valverde’s “masterclass in midfield dominance,” highlighting his ability to adapt across multiple roles. “Federico was exceptional tonight. He filled gaps, created danger and finished like a true striker,” the Madrid coach said. Valverde himself dedicated the performance to the team and fans: “This is for everyone – we showed what we can do even when missing players.”

Guardiola acknowledged the defeat but struck a defiant note: “It’s only the first leg. We’ve come back from worse positions. We need to be sharper in Manchester.”

The result caps a strong midweek for the Spanish giants, who have now won their last five Champions League home knockout matches. It also highlights their record as 15-time European champions and reinforces their reputation for producing defining individual performances in the competition’s biggest nights.

Elsewhere in the round of 16 first legs, holders Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Chelsea 5-2 in Paris, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice late on. Bodø/Glimt stunned Sporting CP 3-0 in Norway, while Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal played out a tense 1-1 draw in Germany.

Tuesday’s ties had already delivered drama, including Atlético Madrid’s 5-2 rout of Tottenham and Bayern Munich’s 6-1 demolition of Atalanta. Galatasaray edged Liverpool 1-0 in Istanbul, and Newcastle and Barcelona shared a 1-1 draw in England.

With the first legs heavily favouring home sides – only Bayern won away – the second legs on March 17-18 promise high stakes and potential comebacks. Quarter-final draws will follow.
